Vintage tribal silver beads and large silver Bheru Shiva pendant necklace from India. The pendant shows Shiva in his terrifying aspect, as protector of the eight directions of the universe. Fastens with a knot and loop. Brought to you from the Bhil people of Rajasthan. Pendant and beads are in good condition, black thread-wrapping is new.
The Bhil are a large ethnic group residing mostly in western India with a few to be found in the district of Sindh, Pakistan. Considered one of India's ancient tribes, they have a rich cultural heritage. The Bhil practice traditional dance and music with flute and drum. In both family and community ceremonies, tradition comes alive in the form of elaborate dress and jewelry. Jewelry has been worn in India for over 5,000 years. Jewelry not only has traditional and aesthetic value, but is also considered a source of security in times of financial crisis.
