The Banjara are the largest originally nomadic group in India. They were historically pastoralists, traders, expert animal breeders and transporters of goods to the inland regions of India. The Banjara tribes are believed to be the descendants of the Roma who settled in the desert regions of Rajasthan over 2,000 years ago. Banjara women are known for their clothing of colorful cotton embellished with mirrors, bells, coins, beading and embroidery and for their expertise in dance. They also wear many pieces of jewelry, often while working. Indeed, many pieces are never taken off and are a permanent part of their costume and dress.
