Vintage Turkoman temporal pendant in fine linked sections.  Fire gilding on openwork metal sections, with red lozenge-shaped glass jewels.  Five original, linked sections form a long pendant typically suspended at the sides of the head, hooked to a cap or headpiece.  There is a hook at the top diamond-shaped section and a small bale at the bottom for attaching a tassel or small dangle.  I have heard some refer to these temple pendants as tekaki pendants.

Have you ever wondered why so many tribal peoples use red in their adornments?  Over much of the world and through millennia, red has been considered the most potent force against evil influences.  Red confronts the forces of darkness with the blaze of the sun and of life.  Sacred sites, window and door frames, thresholds, animal trappings, clothing, jewelry, accessories and all manner of baubles incorporate red for this purpose.  The color red is considered so amuletic that a single red thread worked into a hem border is sufficient to protect the wearer from the evil eye!
