Vintage Banjara Indian coin long chain necklace with fancy coin dangles in the center. Smaller embellished coins separated by tube beads travel up the sides of this piece. Coin pendants and chain are handmade, including small dangles. This is a distinctive coin necklace - most are much more plain.
Old and well-made Banjara coin necklace on handmade chain. This one is lush with tube beads, coins and small dangles. Flat bar at the back makes wearing this heavy large piece much more comfortable. As is often done with special jewelry items, there is a bit of red paint dabbed onto a couple of the coins. This increases their protective properties. Silvery mixed metals. 33 inches total length. Beautiful and very tribal. Pieces this nicely made are a rarity these days. Lots of detail here!
The Banjara are the largest originally nomadic group in India. They were historically pastoralists, traders, expert animal breeders and transporters of goods to the inland regions of India. The Banjara tribes are believed to be the descendants of the Roma who settled in the desert regions of Rajasthan over 2,000 years ago. Banjara women are known for their clothing of colorful cotton embellished with mirrors, bells, coins, beading and embroidery and for their expertise in dance. They also wear many pieces of jewelry, often while working. Indeed, many pieces are never taken off and are a permanent part of their costume and dress.
